Obey Christ and Have Fun!

When I started focusing on my relationship with Christ, I stopped hanging out with some of my closest friends to avoid certain temptations. I didn’t want to be around the same people because we begin to imitate those we are closest to. The Apostle Paul calls for us to imitate him as he imitates Christ. Consequently, as I started to imitate Christ, I found myself bored on the weekends. I needed to find fun ways to enjoy myself while also honoring Christ, so below are 5 ways I changed how I spend my time.

5 ways to Obey Christ and Still Have fun –

1. Music – Switch up the music you listen to. There are plenty of Christian artist out there! Listening to worship music and singing songs to Jesus is important and needs to be a key part in your life. In addition to that there are other genres from folk to rap that still honor Jesus and allow us to get our musical preferences in. A couple of my favorite artist right now are Alex Jean, Hulvey, Uninvtd, and Jimmy Clifton.

2. TV – When I started being conscious of the shows I watched, it surprised me how many shows think we need to see actors on TV being physically intimate with each other. For a while I watched Disney Plus to keep the content wholesome and then I started watching YouTube shows because there are a lot of movies about religious history or reenactments of the Book of Acts for example. As informative as those movies were, I wanted something more exciting. I’ve started to watch DC cartoons a lot because at least I’m rooting for the good guys and it’s a kid show with cleaner content. Other than that, whenever I watch TV now it’s either YouTube or Angel Studios. The Chosen was produced by Angel Studious and is a great way to learn about Jesus. It walks through Jesus’ life from finding his disciples to performing miracles. They have other shows, which I haven’t fully checked out yet but intend to, and some shows for the kids.

3. New Friends – Find a local church and start joining groups. I joined a volleyball group recently and it’s been so much fun meeting new women in the area who love Jesus. We all have our vices but being around people who are strong where we are weak is a great opportunity for love and accountability.

4. Books and Podcast – You should never stop learning and books and podcasts are a great way to entertain yourself. I recently started reading C.S Lewis and fully enjoyed Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters. For those of you who didn’t know he is also the author of The Chronicles of Narnia and those might be a good read as well if you haven’t already. Most days I listen to 15-minute podcasts while on my lunch break or a walk. One of my favorites on Spotify is called Deeper Christian Podcast, definitely check it out. They can be very short yet enlightening.

5. Go outside! – I love pool days, running, playing sports, or volunteering. It’s a great way to be around others while not falling into old habits or temptation. Physical activity is a way for me to bond with family and friends so maybe ask a friend to play tennis one night or go for a walk, it might be the start of a new tradition.

Although these have been the 5 things I’ve implemented, really ask yourself and talk to the Holy Spirit. Find out where the Holy Spirit is convicting you to make a change. He we lead you from what the world glorifies to what the Lord asks us to do.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2
